Our Process Explained
From a science perspective the concept is perfectly logical. The base of our product is Methyl Ester and an emulsifier. Methyl Ester can be extracted from different sources such as cracked soy oil or recycled plant oils. A recycled source is better for the environment. The Methyl Ester bonds with and re-softens the Maltene side of the Asphalt. The Maltenes bind or glue the Asphaltene side of the shingle together. Over time asphalt begins to lose some of its adhesive properties, leading to de- granulation and brittleness. This technology has been in use for 20+ years in the road industry. Some tests were done as early as 1977 in Cleveland, Ohio. The science is technologically sound. Not all roofs should be sprayed. There has to be enough asphaltenes left on both layers of the shingle for the product to have anything left to “rejuvenate.”
Asphalt shingles have changed over the last number of years. They are thinner than they used to be and contain less actual asphalt, and so they tend not to last as long as they used to. Annually, about 12 million tons of asphalt shingle waste ends up in landfills in the United States alone.
